10-year-old girl has baby with cousin
By QMI Agency

A 10-year-old Romanian girl became one of the world's youngest mothers after she gave birth to six-pound, six-ounce baby Nicoleta last week in Spain.

British paper The Daily Mail reports that Elena Chiritescu, whose family is originally from Romania, had the baby with her 13-year-old then-boyfriend Gheorghe Mecic, who also happens to be her cousin. Reports say that the baby was delivered naturally and that she is healthy.

Spanish authorities are determining whether Chiritescu's family should have custody of the baby.

"These things are normal in our country," Olimpia told the paper. "Girls get married at 10 so we don't understand why people are so surprised.
Elena is feeling very well, just like her daughter, who's also doing very well and is very pretty."

The young parents were raised as siblings by their grandmother in Bucharest, Romania's capital, after Chiritescu's father died and her mother, Olimpia, went to Spain to earn money as a strawberry picker.

Olimpia's sister also went to Spain to pick strawberries, leaving her son Mecic also in the care of his grandmother who didn't know about her grandchildren's relationship until Chiritescu's baby bump started to show. She let the two live as a couple until Chiritescu was about to give birth. Her mother took her to Spain where she delivered the baby on Oct. 26.

Chiritescu, her baby and her mother currently live in Spain in a flat with a 22-year-old host who suggested that the family will be returning to Romania despite their wishes to stay.
