Summary: The Final Cut Pro won't import XAVC S files from Sony FDR-AX1 smoothly. The easy workaround is to transcode Sony XAVC S video to a more "edit" friendly codec Apple ProRes. Here is how.

The newly released Sony FDR-AX1 takes the stage, which is an affordable alternative for pros and creative amateur film makers who want a camcorder-style all-in-one solution. While, there are a few issues when it comes to viewing, loading and editing 4K/HD XAVC / S files recorded by Sony XA1 in your non-linear editing software, especially Apple’s Final Cut Pro. Now some tips and tricks for importing Sony XAVC S to Final Cut Pro are listed below.

As you know, in 2012 when Sony introduced its pro level PMW-F55 and Sony PMW-F5 4K cameras it created a new format called XAVC. For the new AX1 a variation on XAVC has been developed called XAVC / S. This format differs from XAVC in that it uses GOP codec of H.264/AVC for video file compression; it’s not an ideal editable format for NLE based on many users’ experience.

Although Sony provides a copy of Sony Vegas with the AX1, which I presume nicely handles the camera's files. Mac users are out of luck in terms of a solution from Sony, since Vegas is a Windows only program. So, how to make Sony AX1 XAVC/S files workable in FCP perfectly? To get rid of the issues, you will need to transcode Sony XAVC/S to a more "edit" friendly codec for Final Cut Pro- and Apple ProRes is.

Now I share the guide with you how to convert Sony XAVC S footage to FCP friendly format using Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac.
