Converting Sony AX1 4k XAVC S to Apple ProRes to FCP
Summary: The Final Cut Pro won't import XAVC S files from Sony FDR-AX1 smoothly. The easy workaround is to transcode Sony XAVC S video to a more "edit" friendly codec Apple ProRes. Here is how.
The newly released Sony FDR-AX1 takes the stage, which is an affordable alternative for pros and creative amateur film makers who want a camcorder-style all-in-one solution. While, there are a few issues when it comes to viewing, loading and editing 4K/HD XAVC / S files recorded by Sony XA1 in your non-linear editing software, especially Apple’s Final Cut Pro. Now some tips and tricks for importing Sony XAVC S to Final Cut Pro are listed below.
As you know, in 2012 when Sony introduced its pro level PMW-F55 and Sony PMW-F5 4K cameras it created a new format called XAVC. For the new AX1 a variation on XAVC has been developed called XAVC / S. This format differs from XAVC in that it uses GOP codec of H.264/AVC for video file compression; it’s not an ideal editable format for NLE based on many users’ experience.
Although Sony provides a copy of Sony Vegas with the AX1, which I presume nicely handles the camera's files. Mac users are out of luck in terms of a solution from Sony, since Vegas is a Windows only program. So, how to make Sony AX1 XAVC/S files workable in FCP perfectly? To get rid of the issues, you will need to transcode Sony XAVC/S to a more "edit" friendly codec for Final Cut Pro- and Apple ProRes is.
Now I share the guide with you how to convert Sony XAVC S footage to FCP friendly format using Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac. With it, you can effortlessly encode/re-encode XAVC S 4K footage shot from Sony FDR-AX1 for smoothly importing and editing in various non-linear editing systems (NLE), including Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express and more.
1. Download, install and run the XAVC S to ProRes Converter; click "Add Videos" icon to load your source XAVC S videos from XQD cards.
2. You just need to go to Final Cut Pro column by choosing "Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) (*.mov)" as best video format for editing Sony XAVC S in Final Cut Pro 6/7/X with good video quality.
3. Click "Settings" button if you’d like to customize advanced audio and video parameters like Video Codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate, Audio codec, sample rate, audio channels.
4. Hit the convert button, it will start converting XAVC S for importing to FCP immediately. Soon after the conversion, just click “Open” button to get the generated files for natively editing in FCP 6/7 as well as Final Cut Pro X perfectly.
