Summary: Have trouble importing MPG(MPEG) files into iMovie 8/9/11 for further editing? If so, follow the quick-start guide to learn how to prepare MPG videos for editing in iMovie without quality loss.

There's a problem that has troubled me for days: I have MPG video files from my Sony cam-corder. I've moved them from the camera to my hard drive. When I import these MPG files into iMovie, nothing happens. I see a pop-up that reads, "Optimizing Video - Processing Event iMovie-my Movies"

Nothing happens in this popup. The progress bar never starts. It seems to Hang at this point.

In usual, I like do some editing with my source videos including MTS, MXF camera/camcorder recordings, or some other common files like AVI, MP4, MPG, etc and then upload to YouTube to share. While, when I try importing MPG to iMovie, the MPG videos can’t be played an edited smoothly in the program.

Searched widely and I got some tech support for loading MPG files into iMovie correctly.

Some guys recommend using MPEG Streamclip to transcode MPG video files into AIC or DV. If the internal format of the video is MPEG-1 or MPEG-4, then MPEG Streamclip will handle the files with no additional software. If the files are MPEG-2, then you need the MPEG 2 Playback Component.

I tried the solution, but no luck. iMovie still didn’t like my MPG files. I even can’t figured out what went wrong. I’d struggle to find another good one. In this try, more than one people suggest to convert MPG to a iMovie most compatible format e.g. Apple InterMediate Codec with Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac.

This video app can help you change MPG(MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and even MPEG-4) into a different format AIC .mov with least quality loss. You should then be able to import the new file into iMovie with smooth editing without any trouble. It will ensure a perfect MPG importing, playing and editing workflow with iMovie 8/9/11 on Mac(Mavericks).

How to Convert MPG files for Editing in iMovie smoothly
